Basic Rules for Pro Family Photos
When it comes to our family we only want the best, so we go that extra mile, we compare, we try and we only choose what can work for all members.
When it comes to family photos, we just want to look good and fit everybody in the photo! That might give some on the spot satisfaction that will work until you see someone else’s family pics that are on your newsfeed just to mock your own.
Just like anything else in life, planning is the mother of all success and social envy, trust us on this! We asked our colleague Mela, the Tello professional photographer by hobby, and online marketing specialist by job title, to give us a list of the most important rules for an awesome photoshoot. So, before you say “cheese”, have a look!
Light is your best friend
Yes, timing is everything, but you have to consider the season as well:
- summer/spring: before 10 am – after 6 pm
- fall/winter: after 2 pm – before sunset
Pay attention to the light as it is the most important factor when taking a photo. A sunny day is the best option for an outdoor family shooting session.
Make sure the photographer is staying into the shade and don’t take photos in direct sunlight or with a direct flash. Look for the soft light because it is the most flattering and also it smooths wrinkles – wink, wink!
Posing
Natural all the way, so keep it casual and don’t try too much. Make sure to move and interact normally with each other, play, look at one another, have some fun, it will show in the pictures.
First of all, don’t be afraid to take a lot of photos, shoot anything that seems appealing to you and enjoy. People might act shy in front of the camera so try to make them feel as comfortable as possible. A little joke could help others loosen up in this situation.
You should go for instant photos, it is the best way to capture someone’s natural beauty. Try taking pictures when others are not paying attention to you, surprise them in their most relaxed pose.
Maybe you could bring your kids’ favorite toy, a blanket, or something that has some meaning for your family as prop, it will add a personal touch. You could actually create a theme for the photo session and announce it a few weeks before the actual shooting so everyone can prepare accordingly for the event – if you have a big family. Go for simple, clean themes that don’t require much effort.
If you don’t want to do anything fancy you can always include the family pet in the photo. The children will surely love it and let’s admit it, nothing is more contagious as a child laugh. Happiness looks good in pictures and you will get all the credit for it.
What to wear
Don’t wear the same outfit, same shirt, same pattern – especially stripes since they will turn out funny looking in the pics.
Try complementary color schemes and mix & match with confidence. When in doubt, just think of basic colors that go together, like these one below:
In the end, it’s all about having a great today and making lovely memories that will last a lifetime, so just have fun!
