Getting started with carrier transfer information
Updated August 18th, 2025
Changing carriers can be a painful process.
For many people, it’s actually the reason why they’re sticking to one of the Big carriers and end up overpaying for wireless. We get it, change can be scary. That is why we’re here to clear the air and provide all the details needed in order to transfer your number to Tello safely and without fuss.
Questions like “Can I port my number to Tello?”, “what carrier information do I need to port my number to Tello?” or “how do I port my number to Tello?” & more are answered below! ⤸ ⤸ ⤸
Carrier transfer information
To bring your phone number to Tello, the number must be active with your previous carrier at the time of the port request. Canceled or inactive numbers cannot be transferred.
You’ll also need to retrieve your porting information directly from your previous carrier. Tello cannot access or request this information on your behalf, even if you’ve used the number before or are the account holder.
Once you have all the information below and have activated your Tello service, you can submit your port-in request from the Porting page in your Tello account.
You will need:
- Account number from your previous carrier
- Port out or transfer PIN from your previous carrier
- If your provider doesn’t use a PIN (as with some landline or VoIP numbers), you can enter 0000
- Billing address on file with your previous carrier
- Account holder’s first and last name exactly as listed with your previous carrier
The port-in will take up to 2 working days for regular mobile numbers and up to 5 working days for landline and VOIP numbers. Check out the list of carriers below and find out what you need to get started and have your phone number released from your previous provider.
Important: Many carriers, including Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T, now have optional or automatic port-out protection in place, largely due to the increase in SIM swap and port-out fraud. This must be removed before your number can be transferred. Contact your previous carrier to confirm that any port-out protection, number lock, or fraud block is disabled before submitting your porting request, or it will be rejected, and you’ll need to resubmit after unlocking your number.
