The 10 GB phone plan experiment: how much data do you really need?
“How much data do I need?” sounds like a simple question. Most people answer it with a guess, a little anxiety, and a plan bigger than they’ll ever use.
We did the math on what everyday phone habits actually cost in data, then built five typical routines and added them up. Every figure comes from a published source, and our full method is at the end, so you can check our work or redo it with your own habits.
Spoiler: most of the routines fit inside 10 GB with room to spare. The one that wasn’t caused by music, maps, or video calls. It was caused by something much smaller and much more addictive.
First, a reality check: most of your data isn’t mobile data
Your phone spends most of the day on Wi-Fi. In a 2024 analysis, OpenSignal found that between 82% and 89% of US smartphone data traffic runs over Wi-Fi, not mobile networks. Your plan only needs to cover what happens off Wi-Fi: the commute, the errands, the waiting room, the walk to lunch.
What 10 GB actually buys
Here’s what 10 GB looks like if you spent all of it on one activity:
- Activity
- Navigation (Google Maps)
- Web browsing
- Podcasts
- Music streaming
- FaceTime video call
- Netflix on mobile
- YouTube
- TikTok (default setting)
- Data per hour
- ~2–5 MB
- ~60 MB
- ~60 MB
- ~72 MB
- ~85 MB
- ~250 MB
- ~300 MB
- ~720 MB
- ~840 MB
- Hours on 10 GB
- Hundreds of hours
- ~165 hours
- ~165 hours
- ~140 hours
- ~115 hours
- ~40 hours
- ~33 hours
- ~14 hours
- ~12 hours
Figures: Netflix from Netflix’s own Help Center; all others from WhistleOut’s mobile data guides. Results vary by device, app settings, and video quality. See “How we did the math” below.
Look at the gap between the top and the bottom of that table. An hour of TikTok uses about as much data as 12 hours of music. On 10 GB, you could listen to music on your commute for more than six months’ worth of workdays. Or you could scroll short videos for about 12 hours.
That’s the real lesson. The question isn’t how much you use your phone. It’s what kind of things you do when you’re away from Wi-Fi.
The experiment: five routines, one month each
We built five typical routines and calculated a month of off-Wi-Fi data for each. Every routine includes a 0.5 GB buffer for messaging, email, notifications, and background app activity.
1. The Wi-Fi Homebody: ~1.8 GB/month
Works from home or is mostly home during the day. Uses mobile data for quick searches, the occasional playlist, and a weekly video call with family while out.
- Habit (off Wi-Fi)
- Browsing, 15 min/day
- Music, 30 min, 3x a week
- FaceTime, 1 hour/week
- Navigation, a few trips
- Messaging & background buffer
- Total
- Monthly data
- 0.5 GB
- 0.5 GB
- 0.4 GB
- ~0.1 GB
- 0.5 GB
- ~1.8 GB
Verdict: A 10 GB plan would be more than five times what they need. A 2 GB plan covers it. For instance, Tello’s 2 GB Plan is $10/month.
2. The Driver: ~4.1 GB/month
A busy parent or someone who drives a lot. Navigation is on most of the day, podcasts fill the car, and a couple of video calls happen from the parking lot.
- Habit (off Wi-Fi)
- Podcasts, 1 hour/day
- Navigation, 1 hour/day
- Browsing, 20 min/day
- YouTube, 30 min/week
- FaceTime, 30 min twice a week
- Messaging & background buffer
- Total
- Monthly data
- 1.8 GB
- ~0.1 GB
- 0.6 GB
- 0.6 GB
- 0.4 GB
- 0.5 GB
- ~4.1 GB
Verdict: A full hour of navigation every single day barely registers. 10 GB leaves plenty of room.
3. The Commuter: ~8.6 GB/month
Takes transit 45 minutes each way on workdays, with music the whole ride and 20 minutes of Instagram along the way.
- Habit (off Wi-Fi)
- Music, 1.5 hours per workday
- Instagram, 20 min per workday
- Browsing, 15 min/day
- Messaging & background buffer
- Total
- Monthly data
- 2.4 GB
- 5.3 GB
- 0.5 GB
- 0.5 GB
- ~8.6 GB
Verdict: It fits within 10 GB. But look closely: 20 minutes of Instagram uses more than twice as much data as an hour and a half of music. The music is cheap. The scrolling is what fills the plan.
4. The Scroller: ~28 GB/month
An hour of TikTok a day while away from Wi-Fi, plus music and a little browsing.
- Habit (off Wi-Fi)
- TikTok, 1 hour/day (default setting)
- Music, 1 hour/day
- Browsing, 15 min/day
- Messaging & background buffer
- Total
- Monthly data
- 25.2 GB
- 2.2 GB
- 0.5 GB
- 0.5 GB
- ~28 GB
Verdict: This is Unlimited territory, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If short video is how you unwind on the go, a bigger plan is the honest answer. With Tello, you can get Unlimited everything for $25/month.
5. The Scroller, with one setting changed: ~14 GB/month
Same routine, but with TikTok’s Data Saver mode turned on.
- Habit (off Wi-Fi)
- TikTok, 1 hour/day (Data Saver on)
- Music, 1 hour/day
- Browsing, 15 min/day
- Messaging & background buffer
- Total
- Monthly data
- 10.8 GB
- 2.2 GB
- 0.5 GB
- 0.5 GB
- ~14 GB
Verdict: One toggle cut the monthly total in half, from Unlimited territory down to a 20 GB plan. Same habits, same hour of scrolling, about half the data.
What the experiment tells us
- Most everyday routines fit in 10 GB. Three of our five profiles landed under 10 GB, and two of those used less than half of it. That makes Tello’s 10 GB Plan for $15/month a comfortable fit for most people, with room to spare.
- Short video is the swing factor. Music, podcasts, maps, browsing, and video calls barely move the needle. Social video can multiply your usage several times over, and it’s the clearest sign you might need more.
- Settings matter almost as much as habits. Data saver modes in apps like TikTok and Netflix can cut usage dramatically without changing what you do.
- Your number is personal. These are example routines, not predictions. The only way to know your real number is to check it (instructions below).
Find your own number in 30 seconds
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular. Scroll down to see total usage and a per-app breakdown.
- Android: Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage (menu names vary slightly by phone).
Check two or three months if you can, since one road trip or one long binge can make a single month look unusual. Then look at the per-app list. If a video or social app sits at the top, that’s where your data goes.
Which plan matches which routine?
This is exactly why we let you build your own plan instead of pushing everyone toward Unlimited.
- If your monthly usage is…
- Under 2 GB (the Homebody)
- 2–10 GB (the Driver, the Commuter)
- 10–20 GB (the Scroller with Data Saver)
- 20 GB+ (the Scroller)
- A good fit at Tello
- 2 GB plan, $10/month
- 10 GB plan, $15/month
- 20 GB plan, $20/month
- Unlimited, $25/month (50 GB high-speed, with Data Rollover)
Every Tello plan comes with unlimited talk & text, Wi-Fi calling, and no contract. If your routine changes, you can upgrade or downgrade anytime at no charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10 GB of data enough for one month?
For many people, yes. In our calculations, routines built around music, podcasts, navigation, browsing, and occasional video calls stayed under 10 GB. Daily short-video scrolling away from Wi-Fi is the habit most likely to push you over.
What uses the most mobile data?
Video. In WhistleOut’s figures, TikTok (~840 MB/hour) and Instagram (~720 MB/hour) use roughly ten times more data per hour than music streaming (~72 MB/hour).
Does Google Maps use a lot of data?
No. In WhistleOut’s test, navigation used only a few megabytes per hour, making it one of the lightest things your phone does.
How can I use less mobile data?
Turn on data saver modes in your video apps, download music, podcasts and shows over Wi-Fi, and set app updates and photo backups to Wi-Fi only.
Can I change my Tello plan if I need more or less data?
Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade anytime, free of charge, with no contract.
How we did the math:
- Data per hour: Netflix’s figure (about 4 hours per GB on the default mobile setting) comes from the Netflix Help Center. All other per-hour figures come from WhistleOut’s mobile data guides. Some of WhistleOut’s figures come from its own tests (browsing, Instagram, FaceTime, podcasts, Google Maps); others it reports without naming a source (TikTok, YouTube, Spotify).
- Units: 1 GB = 1,000 MB. A month = 30 days, with 22 workdays for commuting routines.
- Buffer: We added 0.5 GB per month to every routine for messaging, email, notifications and background activity. This is our own assumption, not a measured figure.
- Wi-Fi: All routines count only usage away from Wi-Fi. We assumed app updates, photo backups and downloads happen on Wi-Fi.
- Limits: Real usage varies with device, app version, video quality, and network conditions. These routines are illustrations, not measurements of real customers.
